Senate Democrats have filed legislation that would prevent the U.S. from attacking Cuba without congressional approval as they seek to force a vote on President Trump's stated goal of a "takeover" of the Caribbean country.

Democrats have repeatedly used war powers resolutions to force debate on Mr. Trump's foreign policy moves, though Republicans have so far mostly backed the president. The resolution filed Thursday by Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine, Ruben Gallego and Adam Schiff would require the president to remove the military from any hostilities with Cuba and could potentially receive a vote by the end of the month.

"Only Congress has the power to declare war under the Constitution, but he operates with the belief that the U.S. military is a...More

Massive emergency oil release fails to stem investor fears as oil tops $100 a barrel

Massive emergency oil release fails to stem investor fears as oil tops $100 a barrel

Stocks slid and oil prices again topped $100 a barrel on Thursday as Iran continued its attacks on U.S allies in the Persian Gulf and ships in the region.

"Iran's strategy of sowing economic chaos in the Gulf is working as tankers come under attack and Hormuz stays shuttered, pushing Brent up toward $100," Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafulli, head of Vital Knowledge, said in a research note.

Oil prices flared despite moves by the Trump administration and the International Energy Agency to inject into global energy markets. The IEA, which includes 32 member countries, announced Wednesday that it would release 400 million barrels to shore up global supply, the largest release in the organization's history.

"The war in the Middle East is creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market," the IEA said in a statement...More

The Big 12's LED floor just glitched out, permanently.

Commissioner Brett Yormark decided late Thursday night to make a drastic switch before Friday's Big 12 Tournament semifinals. The controversial glass floor is gone, and a traditional hardwood court is being brought in and installed overnight.

"After consultation with the coaches of our four semifinal teams, I have decided that, in order to provide our student-athletes with the greatest level of comfort on a huge stage this weekend, we will transition to a hardwood court for the remainder of the tournament. We look forward to a great semifinals and championship game," Yormark told CBS Sports in a statement.

Misty Copeland says Timothée Chalamet wouldn't be an actor if not for ballet, opera

Ballerina Misty Copeland says actor Timothée Chalamet "wouldn't be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star" if it were not for ballet or opera.

The first Black female principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater fired back at the actor's recent comments made during a town hall last month with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey. The two were discussing keeping movie theaters alive when Chalamet appeared to dismiss the significance of ballet and opera, saying, "No one cares."

"I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.' All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership."

Copeland said the actor should be uplifting all art forms...More

14 million doses of fentanyl seized from secret drug lab in Mexico

14 million doses of fentanyl seized from secret drug lab in Mexico

Mexico's government said Thursday it had seized 14 million doses of fentanyl, the latest major haul in a drive to stem the flow of the powerful opioid into the United States.

The Public Security ministry said the drugs were found during raids on a clandestine drug laboratory and warehouse in the municipality of Villa de Alvarez in violence-hit western Colima state.

At the warehouse, police found "approximately 270 kilograms of a substance with characteristics similar to fentanyl, both in powder and pill form," which the ministry said was equivalent to about 14 million doses.

It said six people were arrested but did not say when the operation took place nor give the estimated street value of the drugs.

It was not a record for fentanyl hauls, officials told AFP, pointing to a 2024 operation that yielded a ton more of the drug.

Millions of Americans skip meals, stretch medication to afford health care

Millions of Americans skip meals, stretch medication to afford health care

One-third of Americans are cutting back on everyday living expenses — even skipping meals — and stretching their prescription medications so they can afford health care, according to new polling from the West Health-Gallup Center on Healthcare in America.

About 82 million Americans across low-, middle- and high-income brackets say they are spending less on utilities, driving less to save on gas and taking other steps to afford health care, according to the research center. They also report borrowing money and cutting back on utilities to afford medical care, the study said.

The findings were released as Americans are facing sharply higher gasoline and energy costs due to the Iran war, compounding a longstanding affordability crunch.

What will it take for ships to start sailing through the Strait of Hormuz again?

Before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, an average of 100 vessels per day would safely traverse the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, only one or two ships crossed the narrow waterway, according to MarineTraffic, a ship tracking website.

Reopening the strait, which ordinarily handles some 20% of daily global oil shipments, is widely viewed as essential to bringing down the soaring energy prices caused by the Iran war.

In an interview with CBS News' Major Garrett, American Petroleum Institute CEO Mike Sommers on Wednesday characterized the strait's closure as a "nightmare scenario" for the global economy. "There is no replacing the 20 million barrels of oil that go through the Strait of Hormuz," Sommers said.

Here's what experts said must happen for oil tankers to start sailing again.

Trump weighs Jones Act waiver amid rising fuel prices, White House says

The Trump administration is prepared to waive the Jones Act to loosen shipping rules as the Iran war continues, the White House said Thursday.

The 100-year-old statute requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be carried on ships that are U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed, and it limits the number of tankers domestic shippers can use.

"In the interest of national defense, the White House is considering waiving the Jones Act for a limited period of time to ensure vital energy products and agricultural necessities are flowing freely to U.S. ports," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to CBS News. "This action has not been finalized."

Waiving the rule would allow foreign ships to move fuel between U.S. ports, helping to ease supply disruptions and potentially lower energy prices, according to experts.
